Have a plan in place that when lines do form,  cashiers have a “Line calming plan”.

Most businesses do during their busier times.  Have a plan in place that when lines do form,  cashiers have a “Line calming plan”. That is, as soon as they see lines, they not only call for more help, they apologize to the customers in line so they can hear that the cashier does care, and as each customer approaches the cashier, the cashier again apologizes, and offers the customer something for no charge, such as a soda, candy bar, etc. 

Customers will love you for it.
