State Tax Experience
Our team of professionals has extensive work experience at the largest multinational accounting firms (Big 4), industry, and in state government (specifically the California Department of Tax & Fee Administration, formerly known as the State Board of Equalization). Additionally, Miles Consulting maintains many relationships in other functional areas of accounting and tax in virtually all industries. Customized Sales Tax Services
We provide a full range of sales tax services for our clients. At Miles Consulting, you won’t find a “one-size-fits-all” approach to customer service.
While we have proven processes, they are customized to clients’ specific needs. We will work with your staff, but won’t overburden them — we are aware of the time constraints placed upon in-house staff and design our workplans ahead of the project. We welcome the opportunity to work in tandem with your operations personnel, internal and external accounting team, and legal staff.

Independence
Because we do not perform attest services for our clients, Miles Consulting is able to operate clearly within guidelines for independence required by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Although firms who provide attest and non-attest services may operate those services independently, it is both the “actual” and the “appearance” of independence standards with which public companies must concern themselves. Miles Consulting operates completely independently.
Tested Processes and Documentation
We have a well-developed and tested process for identifying tax issues and providing support for any tax positions recommended to our clients. We leave behind the “roadmap” and documentation of our process that might be necessary for audits and future compliance. This documentation is particularly important in today’s regulatory environment.
Flexibility
Miles Consulting is flexible in both fee arrangements and project management. We have the experience and professionalism that you expect from an experienced firm without the burdens of large firm pricing structures. Pricing arrangements may be tailored to each individual client and situation — there are no hidden costs.
Because we are not a large cumbersome organization with many layers of staff or management, we are able to quickly communicate any necessary change in the scope of your engagement, removing time and fee uncertainties.
Confidentiality
Miles Consulting takes your confidentiality very seriously; you can rest assured our team will hold all information received in strictest confidence. We are also happy to include confidentiality clauses in our engagement letters and/or sign confidentiality agreements at our clients’ request.

Upon request, we are happy to provide references. Many of these references are from long-standing associations with present and former clients that span several years and varying multi-state tax services.
Community Service
Miles Consulting participates annually in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” and the Accounting and Financial Women’s Alliance annual scholarship programs at both the local Silicon Valley and national levels, and in other community fundraisers annually. As part of the company’s 10th anniversary in 2012, we donated $10,000 to local charities.
History
Miles Consulting was founded in 2002 by Monika Miles and Bill Labhart as Labhart Miles Consulting Group. Monika and Bill left Big 4 public accounting to start the firm because they believed they could offer clients more cost effective, personalized service.
We are proud to have served clients across the country, of all sizes, and in many industries. We’ve assisted clients with multi-state issues, economic nexus and sales tax compliance, California and other state-specific tax credits and incentives, and audit support, among others.
2013: Bill Labhart left the firm to enjoy his family and explore retirement
2014: We rebranded the company as Miles Consulting Group
2019: Bill Loew became a shareholder and we expanded our team to include several additional state tax specialists
