About Miles Consulting Group
Miles Consulting Group was founded in 2002, born from Monika Miles’s belief that a specialized, boutique firm could serve clients better and more personally than a large one could, with senior people doing the actual work, and relationships that lasted. She had been a Senior Tax Manager at a Big Four firm, and she left to build something more focused and more personal. More than twenty years later, that’s still how we work.
In that time, the firm has stayed deliberately focused on one thing: multi-state sales tax. Not a department within a general practice, not one service among many, the thing we do all day, for technology and SaaS companies, manufacturers, retailers, and growing businesses of every kind, from startups to the Fortune 500. That focus is the reason a company can hand us a tangled, multi-year, multi-state situation and get a clear answer back, from the people who’ve seen it before.
The People You’ll Actually Work With
One of the advantages of a boutique firm is that you work with its senior people, not a rotating cast of juniors. Monika still leads engagements. Bill Loew, our EVP, brings more than 35 years in sales and use tax (including experience with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, the state’s own tax authority) which means when we sit between you and a state, we know how the other side thinks. Several of our team members are former Big Four advisors, and they’re the ones performing your engagements – more hands on than they would be at a larger firm.
They’re also, simply, people we’re glad to introduce. Our team page is genuinely worth a look, it’ll tell you as much about who you’d be working with as any list of credentials could.
Who We Are, in Our Own Words
Monika and Bill introduce the firm and the way they work: one focus, senior people on every engagement, and a practical approach to all things sales tax. A good place to start if you want a feel for us before you reach out.
The Reasons Clients Stay With Us
Clients usually come to us when they need clarity, they’re trying to understand whether they have exposure, how serious a notice is, whether their software is reliable, or whether a sales tax issue could affect a deal. What they tell us they remember afterward is less about the technical work and more about how it felt to get it handled: that we were quick to respond, that we explained things plainly, that we were organized, and that we took something stressful off their plate.
It’s the reason a lot of our relationships last for years. Clients hire us at one company, move to another, and bring us along. That part we’re especially proud of, it’s the clearest sign we know that the original idea, the one from 2002, still holds.
Rooted in the Community
The same philosophy that guides the client work (long-term relationships and showing up where it matters) shows up outside it too. Monika has led professional organizations including the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance, where she served as National President, and the Silicon Valley chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. And for more than two decades, she and the firm have supported the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (a cause close to home) raising over $300,000 over that time.

Let’s Talk
If any of what brought you here sounds familiar (a worry you can’t quite size, a notice on your desk, a deal on the horizon) the easiest next step is a short conversation with Monika or Bill. No pressure, and no assumption that something’s wrong. Often it’s just the right time to get a clear read.
