A very happy anniversary to Miles Consulting Group! It’s hard to believe we’re already celebrating our 17th year in business. As you can imagine, we’ve seen a lot of legislative changes come and go in that time, but the past year specifically has held quite a few noteworthy milestones, especially in the online sales tax debate.
The Online Sales Tax Debate Goes to the Supreme Court
This past June, the Supreme Court ruled on Wayfair, setting precedent for states to define economic nexus and online sales tax legislation for purchases made online. It’s amazing how almost every state has enacted some kind of economic nexus statute since last June, and it’s the first time in 17 years we’ve seen this many states come together to agree on something!
In the wake of Wayfair, we’ve been keeping very busy helping companies determine their new sales tax exposure in states across the country. Specific ways we’ve been doing this include:
- Helping companies determine their nexus and taxability in a variety of industries, from e-tail and manufacturing to SaaS, software and other technology firms.
- Assisting businesses with remediation efforts as many states are aggressively pursuing non-filers. Remember, voluntary disclosure helps companies stay on the offensive, alleviates penalties and reduces look back periods, but you need to come forward before the states find you!
- Providing helpful education regarding multi-state tax issues and how they may affect various types of businesses. In the past 9 months alone I’ve delivered more than a dozen presentations and webinars explaining about Wayfair, nexus and taxability.

Since this past January we’ve been thrilled to expand our business, adding Bill Loew and three employees to our team in addition to working with even more new clients in many different industries.
