Here we are at the end of December and this is the last blog of the year. I’m sure it’s cliché to ask “where has this year gone?”, but I’m going to do it anyway. 2020 introduced us to the complexities of working in a pandemic environment. And 2021 helped to reinforce that we can (fortunately or unfortunately) continue to do our jobs, network, and garner new clients without leaving the comfort of our homes. Maybe that’s why it feels as though the year sped by so quickly.
As we head into 2022, I like to reflect both on the year just ending, as well as to look forward into the new year and what it has to offer.
In 2021, Miles Consulting Group continued our work with amazing clients, partners and team members.
Clients: Without naming them directly, we worked with some pretty cool companies this year. We had many new clients in the Marketplace Facilitator space, in a variety of industries, including the rental of specialty equipment, sales of chemical products, refurbished clothing, and home services, among others. Our new and existing clients also develop software and SaaS products that connect people, assist with product delivery (including food), and help with security matters. And our e-commerce companies sell all kinds of cool things online! And we work with companies who are creating cutting edge medical products, medicines and vaccines. We also helped several clients successfully navigate state sales tax audits in many states, including CA, WA, NY, and TX, to name a few. And we assisted several “sell side” companies with reducing and remediating state tax exposure in M&A transactions. As we see, time and time again, companies of all sizes need an ally in this space during a deal.
Partners: We are always grateful to have good relationships with our partners, including several CPA firms and CFO firms (and individuals), international consulting partners, along with software companies specializing in sales tax automation. This year, we continued to add relationships in all those categories and appreciate the referrals that come from those partnerships.
Team Members: As a group, we stayed pretty steady this year, but did see some changes. We said goodbye to our intern Raman Burmy, who left us to officially start her career at a Big 4 firm. And we welcomed back Nikki Agopian from an extended maternity leave. Our long-time colleague, Toni Lewis has recently changed her role to be consultative for us in the M&A space, while also taking on a more full-time role at another firm. Finally, we are excited to welcome a new member to the MCG team as Greg Weston joins us as Senior Manager at the first of the year. Stay tuned for more info about Greg in early January! We feel very lucky to have brought together this amazing group of people (and their families) to be part of the MCG team.
In 2022, we will start the year with a focus on some specific initiatives, including an increased focus on assisting our clients with their compliance needs, identification of refund opportunities for overpaid sales tax, and M&A transactions, as well as continued work with clients to navigate retroactive exposure, nexus and taxability matters, and audit support.
In March 2022, the firm will celebrate its 20th anniversary! Once again, “Where have the years gone?” I’m proud to say that while the last 20 years have not been without some challenges, there have been many more good times than bad, and continued growth along the way…in so many ways! Watch for us to continue to keep our readers apprised of changes in state tax laws – from our blogs, to newsletters and social media posts. And, of course, if we can be of assistance in anything state tax related, we will continue to be your resource.
In the meantime, from our Miles Consulting Group family to yours – here’s wishing all of our readers a very Happy and Prosperous 2022! We look forward to connecting with you in the new year.
